Emergency Information

There are very few orthodontic emergencies. Most problems associated with braces can be temporarily relieved at home. However, if a situation arises that you cannot resolve, call our office as soon as possible so we can take care of your problem. In the meantime, the problems reviewed here may help you to resolve any minor problems you may encounter during your orthodontic treatment.

Sore Teeth

If you teeth are sore after a visit, we recommend ibuprofen while your teeth adjust. Acetaminophen (Tylenol ®) may also be used. Warm salt water rinses may also reduce soreness.

Wire Irritation

If a wire is causing irritation, try moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab, eraser-end of a pencil, or tweezers. If they wire will not move, try covering the end of it with a small piece of wax or cotton. It the wire continues to irritate, call our office so we may take care of it for you. Please do not remove the wire!

Loose Bracket

If a bracket comes off the tooth, it will remain attached to the wire by the elastic tie. The loose bracket will not cause any discomfort. If the bracket does happen to come off the wire, save it and bring it to your appointment. Call our office to schedule a repair appointment.

Loose Band

If a band is loose, it will probably remain around the tooth. If the band does come completely off the tooth, save the band and bring it with you to your appointment. Please call our office to schedule a repair appointment for a problem with a band.

Lost Separator

If a separator comes out, you may try and replace it as demonstrated in the office. If you are unable to replace it, call our office and we will be happy to replace it for you.
